Apsaros/Apsyrtos
fort · 330 BC – 2100 AD
Roman fort at the mouth of the modern Chorokhi river in Colchis, established in 63 or 64 CE, rebuilt under Trajan and Hadrian, when it was garrisoned with cohorts from the legio V Macedonica. It was destroyed by an earthquake c. 140 CE, rebuilt, and finally abandoned around 257 CE. Extensive excavations have been undertaken since 2014.
