St. Nilus of Rossano founded what is now known as the Territorial Abbacy of Saint Mary of Grottaferrata in 1004 on the site of a Roman villa that in local tradition was connected to Marcus Tullius Cicero and alleged to be the place where the latter wrote his Quaestiones tusculanae.
