Eleusis

Eleusis, located some 22 km west of Athens, was the site of the cult of Demeter and the sanctuary where the Eleusinian Mysteries were celebrated from the Bronze Age to the Roman Imperial period. It was a coastal deme of the Hippothontis tribe and the site of a military garrison in the Classical and Hellenistic periods.
