Byzantium

An ancient Greek settlement at the southern end of the Bosphorus, where modern-day Istanbul, Turkey, now stands. It flourished and grew throughout the Greek and Roman periods. The city was renamed Constantinopolis (q.v..) and much expanded by the fourth-century emperor, Constantine, and his successors.
