Canal of Xerxes

The so-called canal of Xerxes at Nea Rhode dates to the fifth century BCE. It was a navigable canal dug through the base of Mount Athos in Chalkidiki, northern Greece, as part of the invasion of Greece carried out by king Xerxes I of Persia.
