Vogüé (1868 and 1877) assumed that the large, square fort and bath facilities at the extinct Jebel Seis volcano in Syria were Roman (whence Dussaud 1927 whence BAtlas); however, excavations in the 1960s demonstrated that the fortification and other structures constitute an Umayyad fortified palace and associated settlement built in the late 7th to early 8th centuries CE, incorporating some elements of a pre-existing settlement, fort and/or monastery dating to the 6th century CE. There is no evidence for activity at the site in the early Roman empire.
