Angkor

The capital city of the Khmer empire, founded in the late 9th century by Yasovarman I (889-901). The city was sacked in 1431 by invaders from the Ayutthaya kingdom, and was abandoned except for the temple of Angkor Wat, which remained a Buddhist shrine.
