Picentinus Ager

Picentinus Ager is an area of Campania in the valley of the river known in present-day terms as the Picentino. Pliny the Elder claims that this territory was originally occupied by the Etruscans; in 268 BCE, the Roman state resettled the Picenes there. This occasioned the foundation of a settlement called Picentia. While the location of that settlement remains uncertain, the archaeology of Pontecagnano shows a long, continuing arc of human activity from the Iron Age to the Roman period.
